This painting was inspired by my common kingfisher friend from the North Carolina Zoo Aviary, where I worked as a bird keeper for many years. Stephen loved to flip his food in the air to catch and soften it many times before eating. He was a gregarious show-off popular with bird keepers and visitors alike.
